Well, the system requirements for The Evil Within are out and I guess it was worth buying a GPU that has 4GB of VRAM.
Bethesda posted the system requirements for the upcoming Shinji Mikami horror title that is The Evil Within (due out October 14, 2014 EU and NA), and it turns out that the recommended specs for running the game on PC are pretty hefty. For one, it is recommended to have an i7 CPU, four cores plus, and for the other, you need a GPU with 4GB of VRAM. According to the latest Steam survey (August 2014), most gamers on Steam run a GPU with 1GB of VRAM (33.91%) and almost 50% (48.81%) have a dual core CPU. This might be an i7 CPU for all I know (and my hardware knowledge is limited), but if you don’t have four CPU cores doing the dirty work, too bad. You won’t be playing The Evil Within on PC as the developers “imagined”.
“Well, bollocks to the devs!”, you might say, “I have 8GB of system RAM!”. And you’d be wrong. PCGamesN has a really nice VRAM apocalypse writeup on the whole issue and I’ll just throw down a quote:
Your PC might have 8 gigabytes of system RAM, and 1GB of VRAM, but that isn’t accessible to a game’s renderer without some complicated, and slow, movement of data around the system. Moving data between the GPU and the system RAM is far slower than moving data between the VRAM and the GPU. To get around this, developers can compress, shift, delay and move data around to avoid the hard limit, but eventually, they will run up against it.
It’s also pointed out that:
Only 1.6% of the sampled Steam user-base holds 4GB of VRAM – the recommended requirements for The Evil Within.
In other words, the majority of PC gamers should prepare for the fact that The Evil Within will not run too smoothly on their rigs, because of shitty optimization. Anyway, here are the system requirements for The Evil Within on PC:
Recommended PC System Specifications
- 64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
i7 with four plus cores
- 4 GBs RAM
- 50 GB of hard drive space*
- GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM
- High Speed Internet Connection
Steam account and activation
*It’s worth noting that the 50 GB of space required is for the PC install. When the installation is complete, the game will take up ~41 GB of HDD space.
Speaking of space (and by your request), here are the install sizes for the console versions of the game.
- Xbox One — 40 GB HDD Space
- PlayStation 4 — 40 GB HDD Space
- PlayStation 3 — 7 GB HDD Space
- Xbox 360 — 7 GB
- Note: The Evil Within requires a mandatory install to the Xbox 360’s HDD or a USB 2.0 (or higher) flash drive.
